it’s the end of term at college – so there has been a lot of marking of exams, marking of projects, applying for grants and planning next year. hence no posts on here.
the good news is that the land sale has gone through. MUCH more about this soon!
but as i’ve been working away i’m listening to the many excellent radio stations on the web. just have a look at shoutcast and icecast for a good start. make sure you have broadband and a compatible music player (my favorite is foobar 2000 which has recently usurped winamp on windows)
many of these streams are at 160kbps. the vorbis streams especially are way better than fm quality. so what if you come across a tune you love? why not commit it to your hard disk with the very excellent streamripper. this has the massive advantage over something like total recorder in that it is free and more importantly does not re-encode the file. thus there is no loss of quality. enjoy!

Will check out foobar but i have been using xmplay for ages now and i think it rocks, give it a go. http://www.un4seen.com/ it’s tiny (315k download) doesn’t need to install, loads in a flash i hated winamp and love this!
and while we’re on the subject of downloads Torrent Typhoon seems to be the best torrent search at the moment, give it a whirl
and internet radio i’ll plug Pirate TV still playing some great streams.
oh wow… i’ve just fallen in love with xmplay – thanks mike!
very fast, super small, looks fantastic… bye bye winamp, it’s been nice knowing you…
check out KCRW, WFMU and KEXP for great music.
btw, anyone know why US radio stations all use 4 letter acronyms? (confusingly, east coast stations all start with W and west coast with K it seems)
ok mike and simon – glad you’re both using xmplay.
BUT – give foobar2000 a week and i guarantee you won’t look back. it’s not for the faint-hearted and requires some learning. but if you have an extensive catalogue of music on your computer you will be rewarded.
(i recommended waiting for 0.9 to be released and then the components will all be recompiled.)
